Visit to the Feniglia Dune
The Feniglia Dune is an enchanting stretch of pine forest that separates the sea from Lake Orbetello. A place to take long walks in the shade of pine trees and where you can see animals up close, such as the fallow deer, to whom you can feed a few pieces of bread. Going deeper into the pine forest you can also see other small animals typical of this area such as foxes and badgers.
You can also decide to rent bikes on site if you want to ride the 6km-route faster. Along the way, about every 1km, there are information panels that indicate the exit that leads to the sea, if you decide to cool off in the water, collect shells or play on the beach.
If you like legends then you cannot miss the Feniglia tombolo, a particular beach formed by a sandy cord that connects an islet to the mainland. Legend has it that the famous painter Caravaggio, fleeing some problems with justice, found refuge right in the tombolo where he died after contracting malaria. To commemorate this event, a stela was placed at the exact spot where the body is believed to have been found.
The Feniglia Dune area is accessible from the beaches of Ansedonia and Feniglia from which an unpaved road leads to the reserve. Otherwise, coming from Grosseto towards Porto Ercole, after about two kilometers, on the left you will find Feniglia.
