Welcome to Capalbio

Capalbio is located in Tuscany, and more precisely in the heart of Maremma; here, history and nature, tradition and innovation meet.

Some important historical evidence suggests that the territory of Capalbio was already inhabited in ancient times by the Etruscans and the Romans, but what we know for sure, is that the origins of this ancient village date back to the twelfth century. Later, this area came under the dominion of important families such as the Aldobrandeschi, to whom we owe the construction of the imposing Rocca Aldobrandesca, which can be visited today.

When the Republic of Siena took possession of Capalbio, it built high defensive walls and a castle that has always dominated the entire area. During the Medici hegemony, the town experienced the social and political phenomenon of banditry, of which Domenico Tiburzi is the main exponent.

Finally, the Collacchioni family also left important traces of their presence in the Capalbio area, as they built the elegant Palazzo Collacchioni. Historical beauties go hand in hand with modern ones, among which is the famous Tarot Garden, a very suggestive and colourful artistic park.

In Capalbio, the sea is one of the main attractions: 12 km of fine sand and crystal-clear sea characterise a stretch of the renowned Costa d’Argento, where adventure lovers can play numerous water sports. L’Ultima Spiaggia and Chiarone are just two of the beautiful beaches you will find along the coastline that will satisfy your every need.

The Lake Burano Nature Reserve is a true oasis of peace: the beautiful lagoon, coastal dunes and wild nature create an unspoilt environment perfect for birdwatching.

The Capalbio hinterland is also a protected natural area, thanks to its characteristic and unique limestone hillside landscape, characterised by dense Mediterranean scrub forests and ancient rows of vines stretching as far as the eye can see.

Hospitality and kindness distinguish the inhabitants of Capalbio, who are still very attached to their  traditions, such as that of Butteri (local cowboys) or Merca (a festival inspired by the traditional branding of cattle).

Today, Capalbio is one of the most interesting villages in Tuscany, and a very successful tourist destination. It is ready to welcome you all year round and offer you the best immersive experiences you have ever had!
